Bloomington, a city in central Illinois, and the county seat of McLean County since 1830. It's roughly midway between Chicago and St. Louis, Missouri, and next to Normal, Illinois (to the north). For its wildflowers, the region was renamed Keg Grove in 1822 and then Blooming Grove. The town was called Bloomington when it was set out in 1831. A plaque commemorating Abraham Lincoln's famous "lost speech" against slavery, which he made in 1856 at Major's Hall in Bloomington during a conference to create the Republican Party in Illinois. An large part of the economy is focused on farming (especially maize) and livestock husbandry, as well as the manufacturing of farm seeds. The city is also a major producer of confectionery, including candies and vacuum cleaners.

A significant Kickapoo settlement was located just outside Bloomington before the first European-American immigrants arrived in the early 1820s. Originally known as Blooming Grove, the hamlet of Keg Grove became the county seat of newly formed McLean County on December 25, 1830.

A fire at a laundry across the street from the old city hall and police station was noticed by a patrol officer in 1900. He raised the alarm, but the fire completely devastated the downtown area, particularly the sections north and east of the courthouse. The burned-out region, however, was soon rebuilt using local architects George Miller and Paul O. Moratz's plans.

At least for the next two decades, Bloomington's population grew. Rise in Bloomington's downtown area was also affected by agriculture, the development of roads and rail lines, as well as the growth of the insurance industry (especially State Farm Insurance). The city had a population of 76,610 people and a total of 30,454 homes in the 2010 census. 2,814.8 people per square mile (1,099.5/km2) was the population density. At an average density of 1,261.5 units per square mile (492.8/km2), there were 34,339 dwelling units. There were 77.5 percent White residents, 10.1% African Americans, 0.3 percent Native Americans, 7.0% Asian, 1.42 percent other races, and 2.9% people who identified as two or more races in the city as a whole. 5.6 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The City of Bloomington and McLean County, Illinois, make up the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the state of Illinois. People in the area have grown 28% from 1990 to 2006. When the US Census Bureau did a special census of Bloomington in February 2006, it found that the city had grown by 15.7 percent in less than six years. This is where the fastest growth has been, though.

A total of 34,339 homes were found in 2010; 28.8% of these had children under the age of 18, 46.7 percent of these were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder without a husband present, and 41.1 percent were non-families. A total of 32.6% of all households were made up of single people, and of them, 9.2% had a resident over the age of 65. There were 2.41 households and 3.12 families in the United States.

People in the city ranged in age from 0 to 64, with 23.3% under the age of 20, 9.0% between the ages of 18 and 20, 29.8% between the ages of 25 and 44, and 10.2% over the age of 64. The average person's age was 33. There were 95.4 men for every 100 females.

The city had a median income of $58,662, and the median income for a family was $81,166. Compared to women, males had a median income of $56,597, while women had a median income of $38,191. There was $32,672 in per capita income for the city. 1.1% of the population was living below the poverty line, including 12.6% of people under 18 and 6.3% over 65.

At the Bloomington Ice Center (formerly known as Pepsi Ice Center), the Bloomington Parks & Recreation Department operates an indoor public skating rink, which is 200 feet wide by 85 feet long. Recreational and competitive programs are available at the venue. Skate rental is also available as well as a snack stand.

Grossinger Motors Arena (previously the US Cellular Coliseum) in southwest Bloomington was completed in 2006 and is now home to the Bloomington Edge of the Indoor Football League, as well as past home to two Central Hockey League teams. The Central Illinois Flying Aces of the United States Hockey League, as well as Illinois State University's club hockey team and local youth hockey programs, have played there since 2014. The Coliseum has a permanent seating capacity of 7,000, but can accommodate up to 8,000 people for special events. The venue may also be transformed into a theater with a retractable curtain, allowing 2,500-5,000 people to see performances in a more intimate setting. Public programs are still available at the library, including a Bookmobile, which was first called "Library on Wheels" in 1926. The Bookmobile delivers books to people in their own neighborhoods.

A group called the Bloomington Parks & Recreation Department is made up of four groups: Parks, Recreation, Golf and the Miller Park Zoo. 44 parks and three golf courses make up the Department's 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) of land. They include: Airport Park, Atwood Wayside, Angler's Lake Nature Preserve, Bittner Park and Brookridge Park. They also include: Ewing Park 1, Ewing Park 2, EwingPark 3 and Fell AvenuePark. Located in Bloomington and Normal, Illinois, the Bloomington-Normal Constitution Trail is a 24-mile (39 kilometer) running, walking, cycling, and rollerblading path that runs on a designated right of way. The Illinois Symphony Orchestra plays five Masterworks performances, two Pops concerts, and three Chamber Orchestra concerts each year at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts.

In McPherson Hall's Jerome Mirza Theatre, the Illinois Wesleyan University School of Theatre Arts showcases its skills. Every year, four main stage plays are chosen from a playbill that includes anything from Shakespeare to musicals, and they are produced here. McPherson Hall, was opened in 1963 and is named after IWU's 10th President, Harry W. McPherson, has a 300-seat theater, a scene shop, classrooms, and other amenities.

They are an international ballet company that turned twenty-one years old in 2011. USA Ballet has workshops and outreach programs for kids, and they perform at Illinois Wesleyan University's McPherson Theater three times a year.

The 92nd season of American Passion Play is the country's longest-running Passion Play. The Passion Play is set in Palestine and depicts the full life of Christ. It is performed each spring at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts.

Every July in Downtown Bloomington, the Lincoln's Bloomington Festival comprises Civil War reenactments, traditional craft displays, children's activities, musical performances, presentations, and tours.

The David Davis Mansion offers a glimpse into the life friend and mentor to Abraham Lincoln, David Davis, who served as a United States Supreme Court Justice and was a key component during Lincoln's bid for the 1860 presidential nomination. The Davis Mansion, completed in 1872, combines Italianate and Second Empire architectural features and is a model of mid-Victorian style and taste. His Bloomington home, which remained in the Davis family for three succeeding generations, contains the most modern conveniences of that era: a coal-burning stove, gas lighting and indoor plumbing. The David Davis Mansion is a historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

Docents from the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts lead Behind the Curtain Tours. Visitors may learn about all of the building's changes and improvements as well as its neo-Classical interior architecture.

Visit the 36-room estate of Judge David Davis with a group or alone. Docents use artifacts and family stories to interpret the rich social and cultural history of America's western frontier from the 1850s to the 1880s. These include Victorian architecture, family history (with a focus on children), and servant life, domestic life, and technology in the early industrial age.

The mansion is a precursor of the modern homes and comfort systems that we take for granted today, and is a reminder of the role Illinois played in the nation's history when Abraham Lincoln was President. Arrangements can also be made for a special Tea Ladies Inc. program at the mansion.

An audio driving tour named Lincoln's Bloomington and Normal, Illinois is available through the McLean County Museum of History. President Abraham Lincoln is portrayed as a returning guest on the CD-based audio tour, discussing the locations he visited and their significance. The audio tour covers Kersey Fell's Law Office, where Jesse Fell advised Lincoln run for president; the house of Asahel Gridley, Lincoln's friend and client in a defamation action; the Miller-Davis Building, where Lincoln practiced law; and 14 more places, all written and performed by James Keeran.

Monthly tours of Bloomington and Normal are offered by the Bloomington-Normal Area Convention and Visitors Bureau under the name Twin City Tours. At the McLean County Museum of History, tours begin.

Bloomington's primary retail destination is Eastland Mall. Shops like Aeropostale and American Eagle Outfitters can be found at Eastland Mall along with restaurants like Applebee's and Buckle. There are also several recreational activities to be found at Eastland Mall. Although the mall has been in decline in recent years, it is consistent with the overall fall of retail malls in the United States.

There is only one town in Illinois where Beer Nuts Brand Snacks are made. There are two Beer Nuts Company Stores in Bloomington. Each store has a video tour of the plant in Bloomington and a history of the snacks.

Two public school districts serve Bloomington. Bloomington Public Schools District 87 serves the city's interior, with one high school, Bloomington High School, one junior high school, Bloomington Junior High School, six elementary schools (Oakland, Washington, Bent, Irving, Sheridan, and Stevenson elementary schools), and one pre-school, Sarah Raymond Elementary School (named for the first female superintendent for Bloomington).

Growth has taken the city well into the boundaries of a second district, McLean County Unit District No. 5. Although Unit Five originally served only suburban areas, including Normal, the majority of its students now are from Bloomington itself. Unit Five operates two high schools (Normal Community High School and Normal Community West High School), four junior high schools, and numerous elementary schools. As of 2010, Unit Five was constructing its fourth junior high school which is called George Evans Junior High School more commonly known as EJHS. The construction was finished in 2011 Unit 5 was also making two new elementary schools in Bloomington, and is projecting the need for another high school.

The magnificent dome of the McLean County Museum of History serves as a marker for locating the city's historic centre. The courthouse plaza is surrounded by a number of historic buildings from the turn of the century. There are museums, banks, a legal and governmental center, residential housing, a big artist's colony, and several speciality retail enterprises and support services available to visitors in the area. There are numerous dining options, as well as a vibrant nightlife.

City of Bloomington and McLean County offices are located downtown, as with a wide variety of specialized shops, pubs, restaurants, and galleries.
